#1 PLATOON ON 5-ALARM, FIRST-DUE FIRE
Date: 3/13/08

Engine 11, Truck 6, and Battalion 4 responded on the 1st Due fire at 3145 Mount Pleasant St., NW in the Mount Pleasant neighborhood of Northwest. Truck 6 arrived on scene and advised of nothing evident. Engine 11 laid out a supply line from the corner and positioned on side A behind Truck 6. Engine 11's crew advanced the 350' through side A and found dense smoke banked down to the floor. Initial reports had fire on the third floor. Engine 11 and Truck 6 found fire on the 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th floors of a 4 story apartment building.

Truck 6 laddered the roof and opened up, while the interior crews mounted an aggressive attack on the deep seated fire. Truck 6 driver and tiller man and Engine 11 driver threw over 15 ground ladders, took out several windows, and took off security bars.

While the interior crews were mounting their attack, fire starting blowing out of several windows in the rear. As hose lines were knocking down the fire, a flash over occurred, blowing out all windows left intact on side bravo. At this time, the back of the building was fully involved. The interior attack was continued but found to be futile. The fire load and intensity was too much for hand lines. As crews were attempting to back out lines, a Mayday was sounded for a trapped firefighter. Rescue Squad 2's officer was unaccounted for. Tower 3 positioned the bucket for rescue, while Truck 6 driver positioned the stick for removal of the firefighter. Luckily, the Lt. was safely located and placed into the bucket of Tower 3.

At this time, all crews were ordered to evacuate the building. Master stream devices were established while large diameter hose was stretched to nearby truck companies.

Units remained on the scene for over 6 hours flowing water.

**On a side note: Due to the amount of fire found in the rear, an adjacent church went up in flames. Another 2nd alarm was dispatched to this location and units held the fire in check as best as possible.**
